This slide shows two
exoskeletons, or tests, from a
group of marine protozoans called foraminiferans. The shells of these ancient protozoans, which are composed of calcium carbonate, accumulate on sea bottoms and contribute over time to the formation of chalk and limestone. It is largely the bodies of these foraminiferans that have formed England's White Cliffs of Dover and the limestone used to build the Egyptian pyramids. |
