This image shows additional anatomical features of a preserved freshwater mussel.  Note that the heart sits in a space called the pericardial cavity. In molluscs this cavity (which also contains a portion of the gonads and kidneys) represents a much reduced coelom.  As mentioned on the previous page, the mantle cavity in molluscs is the principal body cavity that contains the remainder of the internal organs.
