This image shows a another dissection of a  preserved freshwater mussel.  Note the prominent anterior and posterior adductor muscles that draw the two valves (shells) together to enclose and protect the animal from predators.  The lateral and cardinal hinge teeth (which help the valves to securely interlock) as wells as the gills, gonad and digestive gland can also be seen in this image.
